Birthright - Troy Rowden

I have not

The Ahuahuete skin

of the fishers

of the lake

Texcoco;

The earthen tone

of the spear casters

of the River Congo;

The yellow shimmer

of the rice flooders

of the Yangtze;

Not the red flare

of the net-setters

of the Colorado.

No.

Instead, my inheritance is a white tub

To sit in and scrub pink my tub-skin.

About the Author

TROY ROWDEN is a student at the University of Texas at El Paso. Through writing, he opens thoughts that shouldn't be divulged and recovers through revision of these pieces, patching together works that want to be memories, but unfailingly resolve themselves to be fiction.
