About the Artist
RUONAN YAN is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She was born and raised in China. She received her BFA degree in graphic design in 2013, and MFA degree in drawing from the New York Academy of Art in 2016.
Ruonan's art is influenced significantly from her Asian background. She has enjoyed drawing figures and portraits from a young age, using sumi ink on rice paper - two very traditional Chinese materials. She enjoys the process more than the result. Ruonan takes her ink figure drawing as an experiment of exploring different compositions; her figure drawings are more like combinations of dots, lines and shapes.
